My preference is now for working mostly in Sketch. Its 2014 now Adobe, I’m sure my computer can handle it. Hi NYC997, Welcome to the Forums :) Affinity Designer can only access the PDF stream included in Ai files (the AI file format is proprietary) which doesnt contain the file layer structure, so theres no way to bring it into Designer. The drawing tools in Illustrator are more mature (although still prone to having WTF moments), but Sketch is progressing fast and unencumbered by legacy UI, like having to tick a checkbox in order to just preview an effect. In my day to day work, the balance is tipping between Illustrator and Sketch. Export Artboards, Slices or Layers to multiple file formats and folder locations at once. Sketch is the King when it comes to export options however. Once SVG output is added, it will overtake Illustrator in this test. So that’s good news! Filename is taken from the slice name so you have full control over that. ![]() ![]() However, slices can easily be created with either the slice tool, or by exporting a particular layer, and SVG output is on their roadmap. Weirdos.Īffinity Designer only currently supports saving the whole document as SVG, and doesn’t have artboards - just slices. If only Adobe hadn’t removed the slice to SVG functionality. I’m currently testing a new version of Tom Byrne’s Multi Exporter script, (coming out soon) which makes this process a lot better, and allows layers to output to SVG with exactly the filename you want. Exporting SVG from artboards also adds the main document name to the filename, when all I want is the artboard name. Therefore iconsets have to split over several documents. Trouble is, it only allows 100 artboards, a limit that can be easily reached with iconsets like Spotify with three different sizes per icon. Illustrator performs very poorly at this test - it removed the ability to output slices to SVG in CS5.5, leaving only the option to export artboards to SVG. Back in the Designer Persona, check out the result. Next, press the Delete key on your keyboard to actually remove the remaining background followed by Select > Deselect. Its not ideal to work on icons in isolation, when they’re together you judge balance and consistency at a glance. Choose a much higher Tolerance level of 30 and hit Apply. If you’re designing a website, the document size dialog restricts your thinking before you’ve even started.Ī new document dialog in Affinity, choose before entering…Īs I do a lot of icon work, one of my first tests in any vector app is whether I can keep all the icon set in one file, and output each one to SVG easily with exactly the filename I desire. You can start working straight away without any confines. It doesn’t constrict you into choosing a document size, or output resolution, its just an infinite blank canvas. Opening a new Sketch document is a breath of fresh air. As someone who has spent a long time getting used to Sketch, I would say its well worth the learning curve.Ī new document in Sketch - no messing about The advantage with Affinity’s approach though is that there is less to relearn, and you can start ‘feeling at home’ early on. The Sketch interface is native, bright and yet neutral, whereas Affinity goes for the more contrasting ‘Dark UI’ of Adobe and Apple Pro apps. Sometimes Affinity goes so far in following Illustrator’s path that I can’t help feel its missing an opportunity to take a fresh approach like Bohemian Coding did with Sketch. ![]() From when you first launch Affinity Designer and create a new document you can tell that they’re going after Adobe Creative Cloud with their trio of apps aimed replacing Illustrator, Photoshop (Affinity Photo) and InDesign (Affinity Publisher). Do you fancy trying a new OS X Vector Illustration app? An upstart called Affinity Designer is out and even though it’s a first version beta, it already looks like a good competitor to Adobe Illustrator. ![]() ![]() ![]() Any keypad button will control the door for 30 seconds after the door starts moving. ![]() ![]() Magic in Wo Long is based on the five elements, or “phases”, and can be used to counter enemy attacks of the opposite phase. However, there is a magic system that introduces a level of strategy for certain fights. There is a block that is tied to a posture system that gets depleted and can eventually break, but there’s no real incentive to use it unless you build your character around blocking. There’s no need to account for different types of unstoppable power attacks because you only need one button to deflect everything, even normal moves. There is a parry/reversal system that looks awesome and feels great to use, but that’s really it in terms of defensive maneuvers. All of these things are pretty common for Soulslikes, but Wo Long lacks the mechanical depth in melee combat that other games have, namely Sekiro. Each weapon also has a unique moveset and special attack. These weapons scale based on the virtues you dedicate upgrade points to, which also determines what type of build your character has. There are thirteen weapon types to use which run the gamut from swords and spears to heavier weapons like hammers, and even ranged options like bows. The enemies themselves are also inventive and cool, and might even give other Soulslike games a run for their money in terms of monstrous creatures. However, while Wo Long does have some things in common with these games, with a little mastery of its core defensive function it might feel closer to a standard action game for its target demographic.Ĭombat in Wo Long is fast-paced, and it’ll definitely punish green players repeatedly for not taking stronger enemies seriously and paying attention to enemy patterns, which are all well-animated and appropriately telegraphed. Others have also compared it to Sekiro from early gameplay demos. "Combat in Wo Long is fast-paced, and it’ll definitely punish green players repeatedly for not taking stronger enemies seriously and paying attention to enemy patterns, which are all well-animated and appropriately telegraphed."įrom a glance, Wo Long seems like it’s taking after Team Ninja’s Nioh series, utilizing similar gameplay mechanics and a fictionalized, pseudo-historical setting that is amplified with plenty of demonic and supernatural entities to spice things up. ![]() It does serve just fine as a means of ushering players from one level into the next, though. Unfortunately, the story is also pretty messy and not very well-written. That item and its significance are explained through the story that is presented through the occasional cutscene. Players take on the role of a soldier who falls in battle, only to be mysteriously revived by a powerful magic item in typical Soulslike fashion. Blood in the streets, villages reduced to smoldering embers, and demonic creatures prowling the wreckage has become commonplace. However, veteran players will probably find Wo Long to be a breeze.Īfter a short intro and a pretty decent character creator, players are dropped into a version of China that is in peril during the late Han dynasty. Like previous works of Team Ninja, this one will also be difficult for newcomers or those uninitiated in the ways of Soulslikes. It’s Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, the newest third-person action RPG coming from Team Ninja, a studio known for making no-nonsense, skill-based action games as far back as 2003’s Ninja Gaiden. Buckle up, Soulslike fans, there’s a brand new game and possibly a brand new series vying for your attention and masochistic tendencies. ![]() ![]() ![]() The Geologist skill at Level 2 will allow you to gather one extra time from Account Item nodes, making it incredibly valuable on gathering runs. The Daily Special changes after every quest and can only be ordered at the Tea Shop before embarking on a quest. Here Piggy, PiggyĪmnesia takes a left turn with A Machine for Pigs, ditching the inventory based puzzle solving, sanity degradation, and limited lamp oil in favor of a much larger horror narrative, a journey through a dark machine that presents a sick kind of mirror onto humanity. Much like The Dark Descent, you learn more about yourself throughout the campaign, and despite its brief nature, I felt it a much more engaging narrative than the original game, though it does lack some of the same sanity bending moments of the original. It presents a sense of terror by putting impending doom on top of puzzle solving. Waking up with no recollection of who you are, the player must undergo a series of Saw-like trials, with the easy route leading to the deaths of those you find trapped along the way, and the hard way requiring solving a series of puzzles while avoiding being killed by creatures that want nothing more than to do just that. Justine does away with the more supernatural elements found in The Dark Descent. It actually lends a deeper sense of fear to the whole thing, with every turn and possibility of death risking a complete reset of the game. There are no saves in Justine and the entire game must be played in one sitting, but given that it can be completed in under 10 minutes if you speed run the whole thing, that’s not a bad thing. Justine is a smaller game, originally an add on to The Dark Descent as part of a promotion for Portal 2. Ironically, being relatable is exactly what a horror game needs to be to really get under the player’s skin, and while The Dark Descent starts off with a clean slate, it got to a point that was no longer under my skin by the end. Some of the more supernatural elements that provide its scares also prove to be its undoing, with a story that becomes less and less relatable the further it goes on, as the amnesia begins to clear. That’s all while dealing with a limited supply of tinderboxes and lamp oil to stave off the darkness.Īt the end of the day, while Amnesia does offer some deep subjective fears, it has been outmaneuvered by many games that were inspired by it. Sound design is crucial to the scares, and the whistling of the wind over your shoulder and the hissing and skittering of the cockroaches all around your feet meld well with the stretching walls as you lose your sanity. ![]() Fortunately the scares here aren’t fully reliant on a graphical acuity. Bodies can either be present or absent, whispers permeate the darkness, and one moment made me extremely squeamish as my deteriorating mind made a number of cockroach shadows move across the screen, almost as if they were right on my TV.Īmnesia Collection is not a remaster though, so aside from this satisfying bit of visual trickery, the graphics on The Dark Descent do look quite a bit more dated than most PS4 games, with unimpressively flat textures and unnatural volume effects - not to mention the obviously PC menus and inventory. Stay in darkness or look at a monster too long and your mental state degrades, creating visual and auditory illusions to mess with your mind. The Dark Descent’s sanity system actually creates more scares the worse you do. Then your history starts to come together, and the more you learn, the darker your psychological state. Imagine waking up and not remembering anything. Included in the Amnesia Collection are Amnesia: The Dark Descent, Amnesia: Justine, and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs, each bringing a unique piece of the Amnesia pie to the table, while all relying on the unknown and decidedly dark narratives to brew a deep sense of fear, but there’s been a lot of console competition in the six years since Amnesia gained its title as scariest game ever. More than six years later Amnesia is finally getting a long awaited console release, and its bringing some friends along for the ride. Amnesia: The Dark Descent landed on PC in 2010, heavily leaning on the psychological scares and largely being considered one of the scariest games released at the time. Scary beings, creepy environments, and even deep seated psychological horror have made there way into many titles. ![]() ![]() Horror games have long tried to capture exactly what scares players. ![]() Fear is so much more than just hulking creatures and things that go bump in the night.
